Growing up in a Christian home, I often viewed many Christian men as sissy or weak or simply boring. While I believed and accepted Jesus as my personal savior my view of the average Christian man was that of a somewhat weaker man. As I've gained knowledge in life I've come to understand a number of things in this world and for two reasons I have added this page to our website.
First, I want others to be able to know and understand that being a Christian does not mean that a man or woman is weak. But rather, the Christian should be strong. The Bible says a number of times to be strong and courageous. While I believe that the main point being made by God was strong character and being brave by exhibiting faith in what He has called one to do through his requested obedience, I also believe that He has called men in the art of fighting (both physically and spiritiually) to be strong in a number of ways.
Secondly, I believe that to be able to reach men and women, which we are called to do as a follower of Christ, we must be able to relate to them on some level. I believe that the majority of men enjoy the test of pure strength and matching of physical attributes in a number of ways, such as team or individual sports and also fighting.
Grappling is a sport that is a martial arts form that involves a great amount of strategic skills and maneuvers and pure brute strength while attempting to submit your opponent through different tactical physical movements. Grappling is a sport that is highly competitive, which is something that I personally enjoy, but also a way I believe can reach others that may view Christians as a weaker or boring part of society.
I am the oldest of 7 awesome brothers and sisters. My three brothers are also highly involved in grappling. Shane Smith, my oldest brother, is a certified personal trainer and also is an instructor in competitive grappling. His website can be found at: http://www.grapplefortruth.org/.
His testimony is amazing. For someone who was expected to not survive at birth at a birth rate of 2 pounds and a following number of life-threatening surgeries, he is now on pace to benchpress 400 pounds and already curls (with one arm) over 100 pounds. Needless to say, his older brother is extremely proud of him.
If you are locally in the area, he trains approximately 20 different students in competitive grappling in Greensburg, Kansas on Monday and Friday evenings and also provides personal training at a competitive rate while he himself is training for competing in upcoming body building competitions.
Shane also believes that our body is a gift from God and that our body is not our own, but should be used for God's glory. Shane incorporates a portion of his grappling sessions with prayer and often a short devotional.
If you are looking for gaining personal strength, learning the art of ground fighting for exercise or self-protection, or just an avenue of a stress-reliever, Shane Smith is the man to be in touch with. His website provides more information about his business and how he would like to help.
